Food Delivery Instructions

Thank you for volunteering to make food deliveries on behalf of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. A schedule will be made up by the church office which will give you an idea of when you will be contacted. Unfortunately, we cannot give you an exact time and day since the need is usually an emergency. The call may come at an inconvenient time for you, but we hope that you will make every effort to deliver the food as soon as possible. If the month which you have been scheduled is a particularly busy one for you, please try to trade with someone who has a more convenient month. Please contact the church office (352-1732) with any changes that are made. If you have any problems finding someone to switch with you, please contact Donna Clark (356-3278).

Basically, this is how the program works: empty tomb receives referrals from various social service agencies in town regarding people who have a short-term emergency need for food which cannot be met by the agency. Empty tomb then contacts one of the thirty-six volunteer church representatives who are participating in the program. When Good Shepherd receives a call, the office manager looks on the schedule and contacts one of the team members designated for that month. If you are on Team A, you will be contacted in the beginning of the month and if you are on Team B, you will be contacted the last half of the month. You will be given the name of the family, the address, a contact phone number (if there is one) the number of people in the family, the circumstances of the need, and if there are any known special food needs. You then should check with your partner to determine an appropriate time to make the delivery, keeping in mind that it should be done as soon as possible. If the family has a phone, it is good to call and reassure them that food is on the way and to determine if there are any special food needs. Enclosed you will find a procedure sheet which is a good checklist to follow.

Be prepared to make either one or two deliveries during your scheduled month. Our experience has been that food requests normally come in the first part of the week.

Pre-Delivery Preparation

If phone number for family is available:

  1. Using *67 to block your home or cell number (or you may use the church phone), phone the family in need, identify yourself as a member of GSLC. Explain that you are calling in response to a request from Empty Tomb to deliver food.
  2. Inquire when a family member will be home to accept delivery.
  3. Ask about any dietary requests and types of food needed, e.g. condiments, coffee (regular or decaf).
  4. Ask about the need to include such things as personal hygiene items, e.g. toilet paper, Kleenex, toothbrushes, soap.
  5. Ask if there are infants or small children in the household and any special needs, e.g. diapers or formula.
  6. Inquire about the working conditions of stove and refrigerator and storage space.

If no phone number is available, Empty Tomb will provide the necessary information.

Menu planning

  1. Consider the number of Days involved and the number of basic meals the family will need to prepare. Shopping lists and suggested menus are on the pantry shelf.
  2. Go to the Loaves and Fish pantry and use the shopping list to choose the necessary canned goods, staples, and household supplies to make up the number of meals required. Check the freezer for any possible items
  3. Note any items you will need to purchase that were not available in the pantry. If there is a need for diapers you need to know the child's weight.
  4. Put a Good Shepherd enclosure card in one of the sacks.

Purchasing additional items at County Market

You may go to any of these County Market Stores: 2901 West Kirby, Champaign (Kirby and Duncan), 312 East Kirby (across from Custard Cup), or 1819 Philo Road, Urbana.

  1. Pick up the County Market MAX saver card from the Loaves and Fishes pantry.
  2. Go to the Customer Service Counter and indicate that you are a member of GSLC and will be going through one of the check out lines.
  3. They will either give you a charge form or indicate that when you arrive at the lane, you should tell the clerk that you have an “in-store” purchase.
  4. The Clerk will have you sign two forms and give you a copy of the form and the receipt. The form and receipt should be turned into the church secretary.

Making the food delivery

  • Locate the address and when the individual answers the door, announce that you are a member of GSLC delivering food.
  • Relay to the family that should they have further needs, they should convey them to Empty Tomb.
  • Say “Goodbye and God Bless you.”

If you cannot deliver directly due to a mix up, you may take the delivery to empty tomb, 301 north fourth st., champaign during 8:00 a.M. And 5:00 p.M. M-f; 9:00 a.M. To 5:00 p.M. On saturday.

Thank you for your service.
